The MTU team’s ongoing NSF CyberTraining project addresses the construction industry’s low digitalization level and long-standing challenges, such as low productivity, ineffective collaboration, and a lack of digital skills. Broadening the adoption of digital technologies and cyber-infrastructures (CI) is essential for the industry’s future success. Building Information Modeling (BIM), a key CI, enables the creation of digital representations of facilities’ physical and functional characteristics. This pilot project aims to develop a cognitive and generative AI-driven CI training platform by integrating advanced BIM skills into undergraduate construction programs. The knowledge gained will establish a foundation for understanding how generative AI can support intelligent tutoring in engineering education, including construction, civil, and electrical engineering. This initiative could help address the nation’s labor shortage by equipping future professionals with essential digital skills, ultimately revolutionizing construction operations and workforce development.
